Dior Vernis Merveille 651 (Holiday 2011 Les Rouges Or Collection)

Dior Merveille 651 Vernis Nail Polish Bottle

With a name like Merveille, meaning “marvel” and “miracle” in French, I did hope for a small miracle. After all, I chose to wear this Vernis last out of the Dior Les Rouges Or collection, not because I save the best for last, but because it’s admittedly the one I was least excited to try.

I assumed it would be an “ordinary” sparkly red that many brands release every holiday season, a color that I’ve avoided purchasing time and time again. I finally decided to acquire one with my favorite Dior formula and brush. What I found was not a typical Christmas red, but one that makes me think of…the tropics! :D

Perhaps because I’m wearing this immediately after Dior Apparat, a darker bordeaux red, Merveille seems extremely bright. It’s far from a neon, yet I’m nearly blinded by it when it catches the light.

In natural lighting, it has a pink undertone mixed with the bright orange-red. It reminds me of tropical fruit punch, the ones laden with red food coloring and seem as if they can glow in the dark. That’s what I meant by “tropical.” :P

The red and gold micro-shimmer is very subtle and merely provide a metallic sheen over the nails. They can only be individually detected when held close to the face, and provide depth with a luminous glow at an arm’s length.

The formula is, as usual, top notch: very smooth, fast-drying, and opaque in 2 coats. I find Dior’s shimmery formulas to be slightly less thicker in consistency compared to their creme finishes. They’re just thick enough so that they glide easily over the nails, only where you place the brush. It’s not watery, so there isn’t a risk of it “running” and flooding the cuticles or sides of nails.

As expected, it’s the most shimmery under direct lighting, but the gold shimmer is not as heart-stopping as Exquis and Apparat. Nevertheless, sunshine really warms up its color and brings out the orange-red base color. This is the “small miracle” when the pink undertone is overshadowed by the gold shimmer, making this a warmer, orange-toned red. Miraculous, or no?

Overall, it’s not my favorite out of the 3 other Les Rouges Or Vernis, but it’s a bright, glowing, festive red with a hint of uniqueness that I’m happy to add to my minuscule red collection.

Merveille (USD $22) is limited edition and currently available online and in stores at Dior.com and Dior counters worldwide.

  1. I have on Merveille right now and I have to agree, it’s quite bright! I was admiring my nails in the mirror this morning (what, everyone does that, right?) and it definitely is an eye-catching polish. Of course, more gold shimmer would not go amiss for me. But I can easily appreciate it for what it is. I was also thinking that for those who enjoy Apparat and Merveille, Revlon Get Reddy is another beautiful red with gold shimmer polish that might be worth checking out. I was comparing it to Merveille and it’s a little darker, pinker and sparklier, but I don’t think it is as dark and rich in color as Apparat. Sort of an in-between color. Plus it has good associations for me because I wore it while gallivanting around Paris for the first (but hopefully not only!) time :).

    • Hi, nail twin! :) Merveille is so bright and I can’t stop admiring it on my nails, too. Looking at it in the mirror is like receiving outside perspective ;) lol. Another weird thing I like to do is admire my nails wet with water droplets, like when I wash my hands or in the bath. Everyone does that too, right? …Right?

How cool that you have a good memory associated with Get Reddy. That’s a plus to owning many polish options…one for each occasion, and you can easily recall that day based on the color you were wearing! :D

  2. Wow! That’s really bright. May be a nice toe color in the summer …

    • Isn’t it? It’s somehow many times brighter on the nails than in the bottle. I’m going to take your suggestion and save it for pedicures. :)

      • It’s odd that it’s brighter on nails than in the bottle. Very uncharacteristic of most vernis, wouldn’t you say?

        • I see nail polishes deepen on the nails, but rarely brighter. It almost looks hazy in the bottle as if the glass is frosted, yet quite blinding on the nails. It’s a beauty mystery! :P

  3. I really love it! But hey, as a lover of reds I have to!
That red really is a stunning color on your beautiful Nails Peach.
I know, reds are not your favorites but you really wear them well.
First I was afraid, that the Merveille would be too close to the Jamaican Pepper, but I’m glad it isn’t. So thank you for sharing!

    • Hi girl! Thanks, you know my taste really well. How do you think Merveille compares to Jamaican Pepper? As far as I can see, JP is more of a true red, but I’d love to hear what you think when the holiday collection reaches your Dior counter. :)

  4. Hi! Just came across your blog via My Women Stuff! ;)

This Dior Vernis is a gorgeous shade for the holidays, isn’t it? Yet even more gorgeous are your perfectly groomed hands and nails, and the perfect application!

What say you?
